ロビーに到着してまず圧倒されるのがそのワイルドな眺望。剝き出しの岩肌を幾筋もの渓流が流れ落ち、そのかたわらを孔雀が極彩色の羽を広げ悠然と歩いているのだ。　渓流沿いに造成されたこのリゾーとは、‘04年5月にオープン。今はまだ6棟のヴィラしかないが、年内にはさらに6棟（うち2棟はスイート）をオープンさせるという。ヴィラはロビーはよりもー段高い位置につくられ、眼下には渓流を望むことができる。窓を開け放てば、水辺特有のマイナスィオンをたっぷりと含んだ涼風が吹き抜けてゆくのを感じる。内装はオーナーの趣味が生かされたバリとランナーの折衷スタイル。建材や家具にはチークや竹が用いられ、部屋のいたるところに色あざやかな木版画が飾られている。あのアンジェリーナ. ジョリーも愛息を伴ってステイしたことがあり、その際「「ステキな部屋ね」と褒めたれました」とオーナーは胸を張る。

さて、なにをして過ごそうか。そんなことを考えつつ敷地内を散歩していると、渓流にせり出したテラスでデッキチェアに寝そべるゲストを見かけた。テーブルにはビール、胸に乗った読みかけの本が寝息とともに規則正しく上下している。そう、この他での過ごし方はまさにこれ。ワイルドかつシンプル。だれにも邪魔されない休みがここにはある。

My Deluxe Bungalow had a very spacious terrace with a gorgeous view and a set of deck chairs. The interior was rather simple but impeccable. The creamy curtains and ditto sofa matched harmoniously with of the room. All the pleasurable room amenities, such as bathrobes, coffee set and soft cotton slippers, were available, and a fruit basket waited to be massacred. A half circular sofa filled up the bay window, a comfortable piece of furniture to watch TV, one of the DVD movies provided by the resort, or to use as a cozy reading haven.
An outdoor shower, caressed by foliage, surrounded by flowers, and witnessing a rising or setting sun, is always a romantic affair. A wide showerhead splashed its hot jet, welcome in the evening coolness, while a white peacock settled down as an onlooker.
At dusk, cicadas briefly outrivaled the waterfall in decibels. When their piercing cacophony finally calmed down, the mountain stream got the upper hand again.
The newly roofed, open air, riverside dining terrace was dimly lit and very atmospheric. For more eccentric tastes, there is a bamboo set planted right in a little pond at the foot of the waterfall, where one can sip its cool beer with feet flooded by the river water. A bamboo plateau is fixed in the middle of a water mass between two cascading stretches. It sports a two-tiered, Bordeaux-Lacquered umbrella and serves as a unique kantoke dinner venue for romantic couples.
You can sit, read, or just relax the whole day in this little heaven, with the unrelenting sound of the cascading river scrubbing the rocks and boulders, which make up the Mae Raem riverbed. And there’s a scenic Tad Mok Waterfalls nearby which is just a walking distance. Throw in the breath-taking new “Deluxe Panorama”villa, and The Sukantara Cascade Resort and Spa is just delightful, and people who don’t enjoy this kind of nature resort must have veiled eyes and concrete hearts.

　チェンマイ中心部・チェンマイ空港から約40分のメーリム。自然いっぱいのこの場所に今年オープンした「スカンタラ・カスケード・リゾート」は、緑と川と静寂に抱かれた、山のリゾートホテルです。ランナー＆バリテイストが融けあった、わずか6客室の心を癒す小さな宿です。

　
◆轟々と流れる川の音に誘われて
車はチェンマイ市街地をとっくに過ぎて、メーリムの山道をどんどん奥へ向かっています。ぐんぐん山を登り、幾つのカーブを越えたことでしょう。もうこのあたりは時おり小さな村の集落が目に入るくらいで、原生の木々や竹が生い茂る深い山の中。

「こんな場所にリゾートがあるなんて」。まるで森林にすっぽりと包まれるように、「スカンタラ・カスケード・リゾート」がありました。「いらっしゃいませ。足元に気をつけて」。と、私の荷物を持って私を案内してくれたのは、民族衣装風のユニフォームを着たスタッフの少年。導かれてフロント奥手のロビー＆ダイニングに案内されました。その瞬間、はっと息が止まりそうな素晴らしい景観に目を奪われました。すぐ目の前は川。幾重にもなった小さな滝のような渓流。そして、轟々と岩を打つ瀬音。この宿の名は「スカンタラ」。スは美しい、カンタラとは山から湧き出る水の流れが作り出す滝（カスケード）といった意味だそうです。リゾートの施設は、すべて渓流の眺望を生かしています。桟敷席のようにせり出した木のテラスのダイニング。川沿いのガーデンと散策路の何カ所にも縁台や縁側があり、イスやリクライニングチェアが置かれています。
　夕食が終わると雨も止み、ふと気がつくと朧月夜でした。きっと月夜もいいんでしょうね。月と渓流を眺めて一献。そんな風流な夜を迎えたい。

そして、客室は、山肌の木々に隠れるように建つコテージ。三角屋根風の吹き抜けの高い天井のランナースタイルとバリテイストをうまく合わせた快適なデザインです。シャワーとトイレと洗面台は寝室の屋外にあり、湯浴みをする裸の体がまるで自然の中に溶け込んでいくよう。そして、客室付きのテラスで夕涼み。どの客室テラスからも渓流の眺望が楽しめます。

渓流沿いの瀟洒なリゾート。しっとりとした宿の雰囲気は、仙仁温泉（長野）か湯谷温泉（愛知県）あたりの湯宿のようだ。ああ、ここに露天風呂でもあったなら。

◆豊かな大地の恵み、山の味覚を堪能
　食の面でもいたく感激しました。「お天気のいい日は桟敷席でカントークディナーを召し上がっていただけます」（要予約。一人前450バーツから）と言われて楽しみにしていましたが、あいにくの雨で残念。しかし、十分に満たされました。アンティークのランプとキャンドルの灯り、ポイントごとにライトアップして幻想的なムードを醸し出す宵闇の滝、BGMは渓流の音。こんな素敵な演出は、他のどこにも真似できないもの。

カントークディナーのかわりに出てきたものは、ごく普通の北部タイの料理。野菜とナムプリック、カレー、エビと野菜の炒め物、キノコのスープ、カオニョウ・・・。シンプルな献立ですが、チェンマイの山のリゾートならではの食事。採れたて野菜、ロイヤルプロジェクトの産物、タイ北部独特のしっとりした食感のもち米。そして、今が旬の山の幸キノコ。季節感ある素材を使ったタイ料理は、何を食べても美味しかった。作る人はまさしくプロ。小さな山の宿にふさわしい、アットホームなもてなし食です。

◆安眠後の爽やかな朝、自然の中の贅沢な時
夕食時間が終わるとみなが客室へ帰り、リゾートは静寂に包まれます。自然に眠くなってぐっすり休み、翌朝はとても快適な目覚めでした。朝食は、アメリカンブレックファーストかタイ式朝ごはん。ふっくら焼いたオムレツとおいしいコーヒーも魅力だけれど、カオトムをオーダー。フレッシュオレンジジュースは、チェンマイ特産の甘いみかんを絞ってもらいました。さて、今日は何をしようかな。周囲の見どころは、ホテルから車で30分以内のところに、滝やクイーンシリキッド植物園やいくつものオーキッドファームがあります。

エレファントビレッジやモンキーパーク、新しいバギーカーを使ったアトラクションなども楽しい。チェンマイへも好アクセス。でも、この宿は、ここに居るだけで十分。プールはないけれど（これから作る予定がある）、川遊びができます。スパ施設はありませんがマッサージは客室か川辺の涼み台など好みの場所で。孔雀とオオムと犬が戯れ、セミや蝶が遊び、カブトムシもカタツムリも我が物顔で歩いてる。宿は何もかもが自然体。オーナーの心のあり方がよくわかる。心意気が伝わってきます。それがわかると、宿泊料は決して高くは感じません。長逗留したいやすらぎに満ちたリゾートです

整體看來，Sukantara飯店環境優雅寧靜，有山、有瀑布、有河水、還有吊橋，美得像是山神所賜予的禮物般，曾經被泰國觀光局評選為「泰國頂尖度假天堂」，地處深山，雖然可能對一般自助行背包客不便，但好萊塢明星喜歡去那裏休生養息，當地泰國人也喜歡去那裏拍婚紗照，想要真正放鬆的台灣情侶們一定也會喜歡那個地方。

Hotel das Cataratas, Brazil

  This 200-room colonial confection is the only hotel within Brazil’s Iguaçu National Park (though there are also hotels on the Argentinian side of the great waterfall system). It is scheduled to become even more ritzy when new the owner, Orient Express, starts a programme of renovation.

 But no one comes here just for the decor. It’s the setting they’re after; the falls are a two-minute stroll from the building and several of the hotel’s rooms have direct views of them. Better still, das Cataratas was the first property in Latin America to qualify for the ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification thanks to its ecological operating policies.

 Huka Lodge, New Zealand

 Set along the Waikato River in Taupo, this small luxury hotel is a lesson in old-school country comfort. With its open fires, gilt-framed prints and elaborate flower arrangements, this is the nearest thing New Zealand has to a stately home (which is presumably why everyone from Bill Gates to Kate Winslet has checked in). The lodge also boasts a spectacular position just next to Huka Falls. Though none of the bedrooms directly overlooks the cascades, the rapids leading up to the falls can clearly be seen and, if you want to explore further, the falls are a 10-minute stroll from the lodge.

 Sheen Falls Lodge, Ireland

 A member of the swish Relais & Châteaux hotel group, Sheen Falls Lodge is a five-star country house hotel tucked away in south-west Ireland, just outside the village of Kenmare. Keeping true to its history as the summer retreat of the Marquis of Lansdowne, the guest rooms feature custom-made furnishings and tailored bedside reading provided by the lodge’s librarian. The real selling point, however, is the landscape. The mountain backdrop and adjacent falls are both overlooked from some of the rooms, while others have views of Kenmare Bay.

 The series of cascades that runs alongside this resort in northern Thailand might not compete with the likes of Victoria Falls in scale, but it does lend this boutique operation (there are only seven rooms) plenty of atmosphere. The accommodation is scattered through lush gardens along the riverside, and guests can book massages right beside the falls. Don’t expect a rustic hillside retreat, though. The facilities here are luxurious enough to appeal to the likes of Angelina Jolie, who was a guest here recently.

 Stanley Safari Lodge, Zambia

 If you’re keen on seeing Victoria Falls (or the “smoke that thunders”, as it translates from its name in Kololo dialect), the comfortable Stanley Safari Lodge makes an excellent base camp. Marking a dramatic border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls is one of the world’s largest waterfalls. From the lodge you can see the spray over the drop-off. That’s a viewing point for wimps, though. The property can arrange for braver guests to venture closer on a canoe safari.

A private white sand beach, a private morsel of forest, a private stretch of forest, a private stretch of river, a private winery, I had seen it all. But a private waterfall, low and lovely, was a first.

No wonder this resort was listed among the “Best Paradise” by Tourism Authority of Thailand. It was, indeed, a plot of paradise, and I had no problem believing it received a superlative  “Top of Paradise” award.

If you arrive in Chiang Mai, the staff will be pick you up and take you to their forestry heaven located 40 minutes away for B800. For those who drive themselves, the resort is located 26 km north of Chiang Mai. At Mae Rim you turn into Mae Sa Valley road, follow it for about 3 km and past a bungee jumping attraction which also pretends to be ” the original monkey centre” – I didn’t stop to find out if it were monkeys or Australian who jump -  you turn right and zigzag for another 8 km through the greenest possible landscape. Then you arrive in you temporary, cascade-studded paradise.

The first building of this 4-year-young resort you discover, partly hidden in half park half jungle , is the Chiida Spa.
